I picked up the pb version of the upcoming film but haven't read it yet. Has anyone else done so? What's your view on it? I also have some of the more popular translated texts to compare for fun (English major here ;). Does Caitlin R. Kiernan actually translate from Old English? What do you think of the film being done in 3D?

Just trying to get discussion going. :)

Should I re-read American Gods?

I haven't got Anansi Boys yet, it's going to be a holiday (vacation, for you Americans out there) book, so I daren't buy it until just before I go. But I was wondering- should I re-read American Gods before I read Anansi Boys? Would it enhance my enjoyment of the later book?

today i had a 7 hour layover flight and was stuck in San Francisco, gave me more than enough time to read pretty much all of American Gods, fucking excellent. what was a real fucking kick for me, was Rock City at the end, oh my god i cannot express how entertaining that was. though ive spent virtually my entire life in Los Angeles, i had 3 year side trip to Tennessee when i was a kid, Chattanooga. i went to rock city all the time, every fucking DETAIL was straight from my memory as a child, it was fucking crazy. every trail described, every bridge, every garden, attraction, section, path mentioned in Rock City, i literally stood at many times as a child, fuckin A that was fun to read.

Faces of Fantasy book at 99 cent store!

I was at a nearby 99 Cent Only store (Gilroy, CA) and in their book section I found many copies of Faces of Fantasy. It came out in 1996 and features photos of and blurbs by many fantasy authors, including Neil, Poppy Z. Brite, Storm Constantine, Ursula K. LeGuin, Charles de Lint, Marion Zimmer Bradley, etc. Neil is pictured in front of his victorian home on the front cover.

Does anyone know if this book is hard-to-find? If so, I may clean the store out of their copies and share them with other fantasy fans.

"Dakota Fanning has signed on to voice the title character in Laika Entertainment's animated feature Coraline. Henry Selick (Tim Burton's The Nightmare Before Christmas, James and the Giant Peach) is writing and directing the film, based on the best-selling novel by Neil Gaiman. Bill Mechanic will produce through his Pandemonium Films along with Laika's Mary Sandell. The story centers on a young girl (Fanning) who discovers an alternate version of her life after walking through a secret door in her new home. On the surface, this parallel reality is similar to her real life, only much better. The adventure turns dangerous, however, when the girl's counterfeit parents try to keep her forever."

MirrorMask

So, I was checking out the Muppet Central Forum http://www.muppetcentral.com/news/2003/012803.shtml
and I found a blurb on a movie in the works called MirrorMask that is written by Neil and directed by Dave McKean to be released this autumn. http://www.sonypictures.com/movies/mirrormask/

From Muppet Central forum:
MirrorMask centers on Helena, a 15 year old girl in a family of circus entertainers, who often wishes she could run off and join real life. After a fight with her parents about her future plans, her mother falls quite ill and Helena is convinced that it is all her fault. On the eve of her mother's major surgery, she dreams that she is in a strange world with two opposing queens, bizarre creatures, and masked inhabitants. All is not well in this new world - the white queen has fallen ill and can only be restored by the MirrorMask, and it's up to Helena to find it. But as her adventures continue, she begins to wonder whether she's in a dream, or something far more sinister.

So, anyone wanna go see it? :)
Good Omens stuff

From IMDB:
Movie maverick Terry Gilliam is amazed that a planned movie starring Johnny Depp and Robin Williams is still on the shelf - because American investors can't raise $15 million. The former Monty Python member was thrilled when international money men offered him $45 million to make the film Good Omens with Depp as a demon and Williams as an angel. But he was shocked to discover that Americans didn't have the same sort of faith in the project, and they failed to raise the extra cash he needed to start work on the project - an adaptation of fantasy writers Terry Pratchett and Neil Gaiman's book. Gilliam tells US magazine Entertainment Weekly, "I couldn't get 15 with Johnny and Robin... These two guys, who would have been brilliant were not worth $15 million in America. That was the moment where I went, 'I don't understand this game. I don't understand this town (Hollywood). I don't understand any of the rules. All I know is I don't like it.'" Gilliam's last project with Depp, the ill-fated Quixote, became one of the biggest movie-making disasters in history when illness and storm-wrecked sets prompted financiers of the film to pull the plug as costs soared. The film, which was never completed, was turned into hit disaster documentary Lost in La Mancha. Gilliam hopes to complete his Don Quixote epic with Depp next year.

There is, apparently, an exquisite theater production of Stardust in Chicago at the Theater Building Chicago...

http://www.ticketmaster.com/artist/964472

I am REALLY tempted to buy two tickets (both theater and airplane) for myself and my son and fly to Chicago for one of the performances the last week.

Has anyone seen it? Has anyone been to this theater? Is there a reasonable hotel nearby?

Any help or suggestions would be lovely.

Hello all-
The Illustrated Screenplay for MirrorMask has been published & is now available. It's a really beautiful hardcover- includes art from the film as well as the screenplay & some storyboards. I haven't really been able to give it a proper look-thru, but it's out there.

Interesting Possibility- A Quiet Evening w/Neil?

If you look on Neil Gaiman's Site www.neilgaiman.com, which is one of the best places on the web- one of the many delicious things you will find is his FAQ. Which contains the following:

"6. How do I arrange a public speaking arrangement with you?

Easy. You go to the Greater Talent Network at www.greatertalent.com and you send them an e-mail telling them you want me to come and talk at your college/business/secret society. Then you and they talk. They tell you how much it costs to get me to go and talk somewhere. You say "HOW MUCH?" and, if you're in the right sort of mood you add "I could get Madonna to come and talk at my school for that kind of money," and then they tell you that actually Madonna's a bit more expensive than I am. And then eventually they get around to asking me if I want to come and give a talk or not."

---
I thought about it a moment, and then I picked up the phone and called Neil Gaiman's representative Lisa at Greater Talent Network- and asked the following... In theory, if I wished to have Neil Gaiman join a group of my friends for dinner, what would it cost me?

She responded, "You are a very generous friend."

"I am. Are we talking $10,000 or are we talking $100,000." I was polite, but pushy.

"Generally it's about $30,000. You need to put together some information, fill out an offer, and fax it back to me." She then e-mailed me a form, in which one puts together said offer, generally for at least six months in the future. They look at the offer, and if it's not illegal or insulting, they forward it on.

It seems like it's possible... Simply get 7 people together who are very big fans... Each person pays $5,000. (The group also pays for first class transport and lodging, and there would be the dinner itself... the total would be about $35,000.)

The result, dinner for 8- and the 8th guest (of honor) is Neil Gaiman.

I think it would be amazing and well worth it. I have been inspired by this man for years. I think it would be an evening not forgotten, and a chance to really talk to one of the most innovative and creative people currently breathing.

So, anyone else in the bay area interested in such an evening this fall? Any other thoughts?

I wonder if the two assasins in Neverwhere, Croup and Vandemar< are actually based on real, historic, or mythical charaters. They seem familiar yet it is hard to pin point where I've read about them. Of course the over the top acting by the two actors that played them in the series was fantastic.

Also, I heard someone actually broke a leg in the filming.

Whales, beavers, unborn rabbits and barnacle geese, actually
posted by Neil Gaiman 6/11/2004 10:17:34 PM
I need to start listening while I'm talking. I was having an incredibly respectable telephone conversation with an extremely respectable person this afternoon, and the subject wandered over to Basque whalers, the way that it does, and I was explaining that whale meat was one of the few red meats that the Catholic church historically allowed to be eaten on Fridays and during Lent. "And, oddly enough, beaver was classified as a fish too," I explained earnestly and helpfully and accurately. "So on Fridays and during Lent people used to eat beaver." There was the sound over the phone of a very respectable and respected person making a sputtering sort of snorting noise, and I noticed that statement was capable of meaning rather more than I'd meant it to...

o.k. so I knew someone who would always talk about how Tori Amos had a lot of lyrics that refered to Neil's work. I guess I've never sat down and figured out if that's true or what. Do y'all know specifics?

I read "Neverwhere" and naturally, it being SO good, it has ruined all other books for me. I keep trying to find something else, just like it, or to match it. I heard Neil is coming out with a sequel (Seven Sisters?) eventually, but I would like to get on with my literary lifestyle until them.

Recommendations of authors similar to Neil/esp. Neverwhere much appreciated. (Please. *whimper*) :)

the BBC produced mini-series version of Neverwhere?

I'm just curious to know how good or bad it may have been.

The reviews on amazon.com indicate a very low budget and "Dr. Who" sort of look and feel, but a lot of people seem to like it despite the low production values. I'm afraid it may be very disappointing since I have such a distinct look in my mind's eye how this would look on film.

I still can't believe a major studio never picked this up...or maybe Neil didn't find the offers appealing?

I think I may have to re-read this.

You are Coraline! You are quirky, strange, and charming. Some people may find you a little alarming and not always get you... But they can piss off, right? You are the kind of person who always needs to be entertained, otherwise you get uncomfortable. You probably still enjoy everything you did when you were little, such as childrens books and Disney movies. Youre fun to be around and are usually the life of the party.

...I have enjoyed many of Neil Gaiman's novels & graphic novels (sadly - I missed most of his writings for "Sandman" - probably need to go back & read those at some point)

Loved those few novels of his that I've read ...strangely, I realized after reading "American Gods" what a small, small world I live in.

Apparently Neil Gaiman and one of my favorite college professors (Frank McConnell) were good friends - sadly I had to learn of my professor's passing by reading about it in the Afterward of "American Gods" ...just a strange surreal moment when those words passed into my brain.

Well... anyway - glad to be here & I'm glad to see some familiar faces & Tribe-Friends here.

Copied from the ComicBook tribe...

March 06, 2004 - 08:53 AM
Heroes ruled copyrightable

Three supporting characters from the Spawn comic books are at the center of a legal dispute between the creators of the popular series

By Ameet Sachdev
Tribune staff reporter
Published March 5, 2004
Copyright ©2004, Chicago Tribune

Spawn, the darkly cool hero of comic books, was turned into a multimedia franchise that included toys, an HBO animated series and a feature film.

It also spawned a legal battle royal over a deal gone sour that pitted two comic book giants and one-time collaborators: Spawn creator Todd McFarlane and Sandman creator and best-selling novelist Neil Gaiman.

The drama recently climaxed in a Chicago federal appeals court. A three-judge panel delivered a resounding victory for Gaiman, who had accused McFarlane of costing him millions of dollars in royalties by breaking promises and refusing to acknowledge his co-ownership of characters that became part of the popular Spawn franchise.

The ruling is more than a win for Gaiman. Intellectual property experts predict the appellate decision will have broader influence on joint authorship issues, giving everyone who participates in a creative work a potential copyright claim.

"There are all kinds of people who contribute ideas to creative works in movies, plays, comic books," said Ronald Staudt, a law professor at Chicago-Kent College of Law, who teaches copyright and Internet law. "Courts normally reject the notion of just contributing ideas on the theory that ideas are not copyrightable.

"Up until now, you had to create something that was independently copyrightable," he said. "The judge says you don't need that."

What started as science fiction fantasy morphed into the reality of a legal tussle between two of the more celebrated figures in the world of comic books.

An Englishman who lives in western Wisconsin, Gaiman wrote a guest issue of Spawn, a fantasy comic featuring armies of the damned that McFarlane had written himself up to that point.

The pair had a handshake deal made in 1992 and McFarlane's promise that he would treat Gaiman "better than the big guys" did, a reference to larger comic book publishers, such as Marvel and DC Comics. Gaiman was paid $100,000 for the issue, according to court documents.

Three new characters emerged from Gaiman's story: the scantily-clad diva warrior Angela, villainous Medieval Spawn and bearded wizard Cogliostro. Sales responded: Gaiman's issue sold about 1 million copies, 400,000 more than a previous issue.

Angela became such a big hit with Spawn readers that Gaiman was asked to write a mini-series about her that was later published in paperback form. Angela and Medieval Spawn also were made into toys by McFarlane's toy company.

The secondary uses of the characters and paperback reprints became the source of much of the dispute. In January 2002, Gaiman sued McFarlane and a number of his companies in federal court in Wisconsin, alleging fraud, copyright violations and non-payment of royalties.

Court documents revealed that the pair struck a deal in 1997 in which Gaiman and McFarlane traded rights to Medieval Spawn and Cogliostro for Miracleman, a character to which Gaiman had contributed in the past. But two years later, McFarlane backed out of the contract.

A seven-member Wisconsin jury in October 2002 awarded Gaiman half ownership in the three characters and half the profits to date from each of those characters and publications since their inception.

While the court is still tallying the amount, Gaiman estimates that he will receive between $2 million and $5 million. After paying his lawyers, he plans to donate the rest to the Comic Book Legal Defense Fund, a 1st Amendment fund for comics.

McFarlane says he will appeal

After the verdict McFarlane promised an appeal and was quoted as saying, "I can't seem to get around that it is a very complicated case that jurors didn't get the full grasp of."

The appellate court said otherwise. In his opinion released at the end of February, Judge Richard Posner of the 7th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals ranges far in his examination of copyright law.

He spends much of 33-page judgment rejecting McFarlane's first defense that Gaiman didn't sue before the 3-year statute of limitations expired on copyright claims.

Copyright decision noteworthy

But his analysis of what kind of fictional characters can be copyrighted is significant, Staudt said. McFarlane argued that Gaiman only contributed the idea for the characters, and ideas are not copyrightable, only expression is. The expression, McFarlane said, was due to his drawing of the characters.

Posner disagreed, saying, "Gaiman's contribution may not have been copyrightable by itself, but his contribution had expressive content without which Cogliostro wouldn't have been a character at all, but merely a drawing."

The judge also rejects the defense's claim that Cogliostro and Medieval Spawn are too commonplace to be copyrighted.

In doing so, Posner disagrees with the 9th Circuit, which in 1954 denied copyright to Dashiell Hammett's famously distinctive detective character Sam Spade.

Posner distinguishes between literary and graphic expression as in comic books.

"A reader of unillustrated fiction completes the work in his mind; the reader of a comic book or the viewer of a movie is passive," Posner wrote.

"That is why kids lose a lot when they don't read fiction, even when the movies and television that they watch are aesthetically superior."

Gaiman said in an interview he found the opinion mildly amusing because it even includes the Lone Ranger's secret identity (John Reid).

"It's an important judgment for protecting creators," said Gaiman, who also is the author of the best-selling novel "American Gods."

McFarlane, of Phoenix, declined to comment on the appellate decision. His attorney, Michael Kahn, said his client was disappointed with the ruling and was exploring further legal options.

Gaiman hopes it's the final chapter in a long-running drama.

"He seems to like paying lawyers," Gaiman said. "But I don't think anybody out there is going to stand behind his point of view now that it has been categorically rejected."
